Abstract

This article presents a critical review of the book Teori Kepribadian by Syamsu Yusuf and Juntika Nurihsan, which is widely used as a core textbook in Guidance and Counseling programs in Indonesia. The purpose of this review is to analyze the book’s identity, theoretical position, scholarly contribution, and relevance to personality studies and counseling practice, particularly in educational settings. The study employs a literature-based method using a descriptive-analytical and reflective approach by systematically examining the book’s content and engaging it in critical dialogue with classical and contemporary personality theories. The findings indicate that the book occupies a strategic position as a foundational, integrative, and applied work, covering major personality theories such as psychoanalytic, behavioristic, humanistic, and social-cognitive approaches. It provides a strong conceptual foundation for prospective counselors to understand clients’ personality dynamics holistically. Nevertheless, the book shows limitations in addressing contemporary perspectives, including the Big Five trait model, narrative approaches, and cultural dimensions of personality. Overall, Teori Kepribadian remains a valuable primary reference in counselor education, particularly when complemented with more recent and diverse personality literature.

Abstrak

Artikel ini menyajikan tinjauan kritis terhadap buku Teori Kepribadian karya Syamsu Yusuf dan Juntika Nurihsan, yang secara luas digunakan sebagai buku ajar utama pada program Bimbingan dan Konseling di Indonesia. Tujuan tinjauan ini adalah untuk menganalisis identitas buku, posisi teoretis, kontribusi akademik, serta relevansinya terhadap kajian kepribadian dan praktik konseling, khususnya dalam konteks pendidikan. Kajian ini menggunakan metode berbasis literatur dengan pendekatan deskriptif-analitis dan reflektif dengan cara menelaah isi buku secara sistematis serta mendialogkannya secara kritis dengan teori-teori kepribadian klasik dan kontemporer. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa buku ini menempati posisi strategis sebagai karya yang mendasar, integratif, dan aplikatif, dengan cakupan teori kepribadian utama seperti pendekatan psikoanalisis, behavioristik, humanistik, dan sosial-kognitif. Buku ini memberikan dasar konseptual yang kuat bagi calon konselor untuk memahami dinamika kepribadian klien secara holistik. Namun demikian, buku ini masih memiliki keterbatasan dalam membahas perspektif kontemporer, termasuk model Big Five (lima faktor kepribadian), pendekatan naratif, dan dimensi budaya dalam kepribadian. Secara keseluruhan, Teori Kepribadian tetap menjadi rujukan utama yang berharga dalam pendidikan konselor, khususnya jika dilengkapi dengan literatur kepribadian yang lebih mutakhir dan beragam..
