Abstract

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is among the most prevalent mental health conditions affecting adolescents and young adults globally, yet it remains persistently ignored due to its frequent misindentification as ordinary shyness and the pervasisve stigma that discourages help-seeking behaviour. This study describes and evaluates an Instagram-based psychoeducational campaign “ANXIEASE” designed to promote mental health literacy regarding SAD among adolescents and university students aged 13-22 years across four Instagram accounts. The campaign disseminated seven structured educational content series over a consecutive period, encompassing topics including the clinical definition of SAD, differential diagnosis from shyness, psychosocial consequences, mental health stigma, emotion regulation techniques (diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, 5-4-3-2-1 grounding, cognitive reappraisal, progressive muscle relaxation), and indicators for professional help-seeking. A quantitative evaluation design was employed utilizing pre-test assessment (n = 29-42 per account), scenario-based comprehension quizzes (POV Quiz covering three ecological contexts: academic presentation, cafeteria, and social gathering), and a post-test measuring knowledge acquisition across four dimensions. Results indicated consistent post-test accuracy improvements across all accounts, with correct response rates of 78%-100% on SAD definition, 85%-100% on harm of coercive social exposure without appropriate support, and 85%-100% on emotion regulation techniques. Additionally, 75%-85% of participants subjectively reported enhanced understanding of SAD following program participation. Engagement data demonstrated a novelty effect pattern, with highest interactions recorded in initial content (92-99 likes) and gradual decline thereafter. These findings confirm that Instagram-based psychoeducational interventions constitute an accessible, scalable, and effective secondary mental health literacy model for adolescent populations.
